Choosing The Right Security Lighting for Your Home

Security Lighting for your HomeEveryone wants to keep their home secure. It’s the reason we lock our doors and arm our security systems. But you may not be aware that something as easy as a security light can be a great deterrence to would-be intruders.

What is a security light?
Security lighting is a term that usually refers to a light mounted on the front of your home that either turns on by a motion detector or turns on from dawn to dusk. However, any light added to the outside of your home can function as a security light. A well-lit outdoor space is a great deterrence because burglars and intruders do not like to be seen, for obvious reasons.

What to look for
Whether you install one large light or several smaller lights, there are a few things you will want to consider.

  • Brightness – many people assume that the brighter the light the better it is for security. This is not actually true. In fact, brighter lights cause darker shadows. This is because the brighter the light, the more contrast is created with the night. You want a light that will adequately light your yard without creating pitch-black shadows.
  • Sensor – Many security lights are motion-activated. This works well because a sudden, unexpected light can startle a would-be intruder. For a main light source over the garage or front door, we recommend motion-activated security lights. Other kinds of security lighting have sensors that turn the light on when it is dark. This works well for additional, lesser light sources, like landscape lights.
  • Location – The most important place to have security lighting is over all exits and entrances to your home. Doors, garages and windows on the first floor of your home should have adequate lighting. This not only deters intruders, but also makes it easier for you to unlock and open your door at night. Landscape lighting along your walkway can add a nice ambiance to your outdoor decorating as well as add additional security.
  • Power – When shopping for security lights, you will notice that there are a variety of options when it comes to how the light is powered. Battery-powered lights allow you to put them just about anywhere without worrying about running electricity to them. However, it also means you will have to keep an eye on the lights and regularly replace the batteries. Solar powered lights are a good option if you live in a sunny climate.

Which one is right for me?
Ultimately, your individual circumstance will determine the type of security lighting you choose. A solar-powered, motion-activated security light may work well for someone in a sunny, city environment. However, that setup may not work for someone in a more overcast climate with outdoor pets because the animals could constantly trip the lights or the sun may not be out enough for the lights to collect enough power.

Use the above considerations for your individual circumstance and you will be able to choose an effective security light solution that meets your needs.
