Is Your Security System Prepared for an Emergency?

Security alarm and burglar systems are designed to keep you, your family, your home and your valuables safe. But some systems may not be as prepared as you think. A security system with radio backup and battery backup is designed to work in most every situation.

Radio Backup
The most common way security systems connect to the central monitoring stations by telephone line. If your alarm goes off, the security system sends a signal to the monitoring station through the telephone line. However, there could be circumstances that prevent this process from working correctly. For example, what happens if:
  • An intruder cuts the telephone line?
  • Weather downs phone lines?
  • Your phone carrier experiences an outage?
In these events your audible alarm will still sound, but the signal cannot be sent to the monitoring station. This means that the monitoring station would be unable to assess the situation and send the proper authorities. Unless, of course, you have radio backup monitoring for your security system.

How it works: Using cellular radio technology, a transmitter in your security system sends a wireless signal to the monitoring station. This means that your security system can still communicate with your security company when your phone lines are down.

Battery Backup
It’s no secret that a security system needs power to operate. Security systems pull their power for sensors and communication hardware from your home’s electrical system. But this also means that if the power to your house fails, your security system can be rendered inoperable. Power failures can be a result of:
  • Downed power lines
  • Intruder cutting power
  • Blackouts/power plant failure
  • Temporary outages due to construction/upgrade
Battery backup for your security system ensures that your home remains protected even when the power to the system is cut or lost.

How it works: Your security system is connected to a battery that acts as a backup to its normal AC power source. In the event that power is lost to your security system, the backup battery automatically kicks in to keep your system functioning properly.

The future is unpredictable, but radio backup and battery backup are two methods your security system can employ to help you prepare for it.
