How To Get a Commercial Burglar Alarm Permit in Houston

If you just had a new alarm system installed for your Houston business, you’ll need to get a permit from the city.


Many cities around the U.S. have instituted permit requirements in an effort to reduce false alarms, which cause unnecessary expense to police and fire departments.

3 ways apply for a commercial alarm permit in Houston

You can apply for a permit from the city in 3 ways: online, by mail or in person. We’ll share how to do each one below.


#1: Register online

The most convenient way to apply for a permit is to visit the City of Houston Burglar Alarm Administration website. 

Here, you can click on the icon titled “First time visitor,” and click the button titled, “Apply and pay online.”

Note: Make sure to have your company credit card handy. 

You’ll be taken to a screen where you can see the permit and administrative fees and the responsibilities of you as the alarm system owner. 

After that information page, you’ll be taken to an online form where you can input your business info. Here are a few tips when filling out the form:

  • Select “Non-Residential” in the dropdown next to “Site Type”
  • If you’re not sure which permit type you need, consult with the company who installed your alarm system and they will let you know.

Once the online form is filled out, you’ll pay the permit fee and everything will be submitted to the city and you’ll have a valid permit.


#2: Mail application

If you’d prefer to submit your application by mail, you can download the application PDF from the City of Houston Burglar Alarm Administration website. 

Just fill out the form by hand and mail a check or money order with the application fee to the address below:

#3: Submit in person

You can also submit the application and pay the fee in person by visiting the address below:

The hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.


How much does a burglar alarm permit cost?

The cost of a burglar alarm permit currently costs $118.58. Plus, you’ll have to pay an additional administrative fee of $29.64. In total, a burglar alarm permit will cost $148.22.

If you also need a holdup or panic alarm permit, it’s an additional $118.58 plus the administrative fee.


How long does a burglar alarm permit last?

A burglar alarm permit in Houston lasts one year from the date of issue. Your permit will need to be renewed annually prior to the expiration date.
